An introduction

For vintage watch collectors, the Amsterdam Watch Company is a well know haven for all that makes a watch enthusiast's heart tick (see what I did there).

I was challenged to bring the signature AWCo shopping experience from their brick and mortar store online, without losing the sense of tailor-made customer experience. A big honour, since I’m a huge watch-nerd myself.

A new starting ground

AWCo's core business is selling watches. However, they don’t want to complete the actual sale online, because they feel passionate about giving their customers a special, personal kind of attention. That’s why we decided to focus on two of the client’s main goals:

1 — Show the in-house knowledge and expertise by highlighting in depth articles, written by the AWCo staff.

2 — Bring attention to another product which they do sell online, watch straps.

Timeline

We introduced the ‘timeline’ as a unique feature for AWCo. Whenever there is an area of interest, the user can tap the sidebar, which will expand into a knowledge section.

Focussing on what matters

The watches at AWCo speak for themselves, that’s why we’ve opted for a clean design, bold typography and lots of space for it’s photography to shine.

Illustrations

To add some more personality to the rebrand and also make a visual link between the website and physical store, I’ve made a total of 10 illustrations, inspired by watch-faces and old school tattoo styling.

These “icons” – as we’ve called them – are also visible in-store and are placed strategically, next to watches for sale, to help tell their stories.

Interactions

Why keep something static when it can be animated, right? The examples above were created in After Effects to give the client an idea of how motion can bring the final product to life and also guide the users on their journey through the website.
